Description:

TSW was tasked with creating a Master Plan for Chason Park, a historic park located in Bainbridge, Georgia, situated in between the historic downtown district and the Flint River. The initial scope of the project was focused on renovating the existing park, but as the project progressed, the team realized that a larger framework was needed that would connect the downtown to the river and other riverfront parks, and could support the redevelopment of vacant and underutilized parcels.

The park is divided into two distinct areas – the upper park and the lower park. The upper park, which is located on a large bluff overlooking the river, features active programming that caters to the needs of the growing resident population in downtown Bainbridge. The park includes a play area with a splash pad, a flexible lawn, small shade structure, ample seating, and overlook views of the river.

The lower park, located in the 100-year floodplain, serves as an extension of an existing riverfront trail. It will be connected to the upper park by a grand staircase and ramp that is built into the side of the bluff, terminating into a lawn space with a river backdrop and connections to a river path extension, trailhead, a fitness area, and a dog park.

TSW was also responsible for providing phasing and grant funding strategies for the project and helping the City prioritize the projects into implementable segments. This approach ensures that the park development is done in a phased manner, allowing for flexibility and adaptability as the project progresses.

In conclusion, the Master Plan for Chason Park developed by TSW is an excellent example of how a historic park can be transformed into a vibrant and functional public space that serves the needs of the community while also promoting sustainable development. The plan takes into account the unique characteristics of the park, including its location on a bluff overlooking the river and its proximity to the historic downtown district, and incorporates them into the design to create a unique and enjoyable park experience for visitors.
