The Macon Telegraph and Mercer University sponsored the 42nd Annual Golden Eagle Awards in Macon, Georgia, earlier this spring. This program recognizes and awards high school seniors who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service throughout Middle Georgia. Twenty-four high schools participated in the nominations for all 13 Academic Categories, which include: Art, Athletics, Citizenship, Drama, English Literature, Industrial/Vocational, Journalism/Marketing/Communications, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science, Technology, and World Languages.
Within each category, a scholarship is awarded; $1,000 for each winner, and $300 for each honorable mention recipient. Fifty-two judges were invited to select the winners from a highly competitive field of nominees. Ross Vogel, who joined TSW in 2016 and works in the firm’s architecture studio, was one of the judges for the Industrial/Vocational Category. As a returning judge, his motivation to take on this task comes from the passion these students have in being the brightest and the most hardworking.
Ross noted, “What’s intriguing is how dedicated and determined these students are in giving back to their community. Each nominee has a great GPA, full list of extra-curricular activities, and several volunteer projects they lead themselves. It’s a challenge to select only one winner.”
Ross hopes to return as a judge in 2020.
