Description:

Columbia State was dedicated in 1967 by Lady Bird Johnson as Tennessee’s first community college. The college has expanded significantly since then, adding four other campuses and significant square footage on its main campus, but many of its buildings and site features are showing their age.

TSW conducted a detailed regional demographic study to look at population growth, market penetration, and social characteristics relevant to potential enrollment growth at each campus. A location quotient and labor market analysis also identified academic programs related to growing and struggling job sectors.

TSW completed a detailed space analysis and phased approach to demolishing or renovating the oldest buildings on campus, while also allowing for future new buildings. The existing mature trees and landscaping are proposed to be enhanced with new pedestrian plazas, building entrance improvements, and a continuation of the main allée of trees. Major renovations of the gymnasium and library will provide much improved facilities to attract and retain more students. The Master Plan’s detailed implementation plan provides cost estimates, funding sources, and project timelines for each recommendation. TSW also previously conducted a comprehensive space analysis for Columbia State’s main campus in 2004.
