Description:
TSW’s Landscape Architecture Studio, in collaboration with Smith Dalia Architects, is leading the transformation of Studioplex on Auburn, a once-promising live-work development that had fallen short of its potential. The design resulted in a vibrant, inclusive hub for residents and businesses in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward.
Originally conceived as a mixed-income rental and studio space, the existing Studioplex structure is now being repositioned through a master planning effort that embraces adaptive reuse as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization. Rather than demolishing and starting anew, the project focuses on upgrading existing units and reimagining the central open-air corridor to create private outdoor spaces for residents while preserving the architectural character of the original building.
TSW’s design approach enhances the corridor with a cohesive palette of planting materials, fostering a sense of unity and comfort throughout the space. Streetscape improvements included new sidewalks, lighting, and urban design elements that better integrate the site into the surrounding community, making it more accessible and inviting.
By breathing new life into a struggling but historically significant structure, the Studioplex on Auburn project exemplifies how adaptive reuse can serve as a powerful tool for sustainable development, community engagement, and urban renewal.
