LCI Studies in the News

In the September 2006 issue of Georgia Trend, the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Livable Centers Initiative program is recognized as the catalyst that has been responsible for so many communities supporting “smart growth” development.

The program is “an on-going 10-year, $500 million grant program that uses federal funds to encourage communities to plan and develop higher-density, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes that have the ability to lessen the length and frequency of car trips and this reduce air pollution as well as traffic congestion.”

Since 2000, the LCI program has supported 75 studies, ranging from the traditional town centers to corridor studies. TSW has been involved in nine of the studies and has also been involved in several of the implementation projects that came out of LCI recommendations, including zoning code updates and streetscape design.
