Description:

The Lexington Freedom Train project honors two local heroes – Lewis and Harriett Hayden – who escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad and went on to become famed abolitionists, helping countless others embark on their own path to freedom. Originally launched as a grassroots initiative, the project is now funded under LexArts and served as a central element of Lexington’s 250th anniversary celebration in 2025.

TSW developed a conceptual plan for the small plaza space surrounding the sculpture. The design highlights the Hayden sculpture as the focal point, while integrating interpretive and educational elements that share the couple’s legacy, Lexington’s complex history including the cruel legacy of slavery, and stories of the

Underground Railroad. As part of the design process, TSW developed cost estimates to help the client maintain alignment with the project budget. The project recognizes the significance of its location in Lexington’s East End neighborhood, its adjacency to Lexington Traditional Magnet School, and its role within the community’s history. The site integrates with the adjacent streetscape on Limestone Street and its positioning as a stop on the Legacy Trail.

The sculpture was unveiled in June 2025, with TSW coordinating the base design to support the overall vision. TSW is now preparing construction documents for the future buildout of the plaza.
