TSW’s Landscape Architecture Studio is partnering with Midtown Alliance on a comprehensive plan to enhance 5th Street, a vital east-west transportation corridor in Midtown Atlanta. The area served by 5th Street is heavily populated and includes a diverse range of residential, commercial, and institutional uses. From the busy Downtown Connector/ eastern edge of the Georgia Tech campus, to its intersection with Myrtle Street, 5th Street plays a critical role in the daily life of Midtown residents, workers, and visitors.
To make this important roadway safer and more efficient for all users, the City of Atlanta has initiated a project called the “5th Street Complete Street.” Led by Midtown Alliance, this project aims to create a more multi-modal transportation system that accommodates the needs of cars, buses, bicycles, ride-shares, and pedestrians. The project will address many of the transportation challenges faced by the community, and make it easier and safer for people to travel along Fifth Street.
The 5th Street Complete Street project includes a range of improvements that will benefit everyone who uses the roadway. For example, new bike lanes will provide a safer and more convenient option for cyclists, while sidewalks will be upgraded to provide better access for pedestrians. In addition, the project will include a variety of signal timing and design changes that will improve traffic flow and reduce delays for cars and buses.
One of the most important aspects of the 5th Street Complete Street project is its focus on creating a safer environment for all users. Safety improvements such as high-visibility crosswalks, new traffic signals, and improved lighting will help to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. These changes will not only make the roadway safer for those who live and work in the area, but will also help to attract more businesses and residents to the community.
Overall, the 5th Street Complete Street project is an ambitious and important initiative that will have a major positive impact on the transportation and safety of Midtown Atlanta. TSW and Midtown Alliance are working closely together to ensure that the project is completed on time and on budget, while also meeting the needs and expectations of the community.
It is an exciting time for transportation in the Midtown area of Atlanta as this effort will not only benefit the current inhabitants but also attract more people to the community making it a more vibrant and safer place to live, work, and play.
