Description:

TSW was retained by the Town of Tyrone to provide planning and design services for a comprehensive Downtown Signage project aimed at improving visual identity, wayfinding, and overall visitor experience within the town core. The project began with an in-depth review and documentation of existing signage throughout the downtown area. This initial phase focused on identifying which signs were effective in terms of visibility, consistency, and function, and where gaps or outdated elements existed. TSW’s team conducted site visits and assessments to better understand the context, materials, and placement of current signage elements.

To help guide the vision for the new signage, TSW compiled and presented a series of case studies from comparable communities that had implemented successful municipal signage and wayfinding programs. These examples offered Town staff and stakeholders a clear understanding of how thoughtfully designed signage can enhance civic branding and pedestrian navigation.

Based on feedback and direction from Town staff, TSW developed a comprehensive set of design alternatives for three main signage categories: monument signs, wayfinding signs, and gateway signs. Each category included multiple stylistic options—traditional, contemporary, and industrial—reflecting the range of aesthetic preferences and future aspirations of the Town. Alongside the design concepts, TSW provided preliminary cost estimates to assist the Town in understanding potential implementation budgets.

The signage concepts were presented to the Tyrone Town Council, where feedback was gathered regarding design preferences, materials, and message hierarchy. Following this input, TSW refined the signage package into a set of final deliverables, which included final design recommendations, location guidelines, and implementation strategies.

The resulting Downtown Signage plan will help establish a more cohesive and welcoming environment for residents and visitors, while reinforcing the Town of Tyrone’s identity and supporting future growth and development efforts.

The final concept signage design package included an implementation map of signage locations and designs for the following signage types:

  • Town Facility/Park Monument Signs for multiple parks, museum and recreation center, and library and community center
  • Downtown Wayfinding Signage
  • Downtown Gateway Signage
