Update: Nathan Benderson Park Recognized at APA Florida Conference

Nathan Benderson Park, located in Sarasota County Florida, has become one of Florida’s most talked-about recreational areas. TSW’s Landscape Architecture Studio designed the park’s overall master plan, which was recently recognized with an APA Florida Award of Excellence in the Planning Project category. Tom Walsh, a TSW representative, presented the park’s master planning process to conference attendees in Orlando during a panel discussion.

Located in unincorporated Sarasota County, the Nathan Benderson Park was once an unimproved borrow pit lake that served road construction needs in the region. However, it has now been transformed into a 600-acre regional park that includes a world-class rowing venue, which was chosen to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

The master plan designed by TSW’s Landscape Architecture Studio for Nathan Benderson Park was the result of extensive collaboration and visioning graphics coordination. The park is intended to serve as a model for sustainable public space planning, using ecological design strategies to create a balance between environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic prosperity.

The Nathan Benderson Park’s master plan encompasses a mix of passive and active recreational opportunities. The park features a lake for non-motorized boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding, as well as bike trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. The park’s centerpiece is the rowing venue, which boasts a state-of-the-art boathouse, spectator seating, and competition courses.

TSW’s Landscape Architecture Studio has been actively involved in designing and planning sustainable public spaces across the country, and the Nathan Benderson Park project is just one example of their commitment to environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic prosperity.
